Halloween Decor – On a Budget

Hi-Lo!!

Do you put up Halloween decorations? I do, it’s one of my favorite holidays! I get a kick out of watching scary movies all month long and taking the kids trick or treating. It’s also my queue to start planning and shopping for Christmas since it’s right around the corner. But that’s another post entirely 🙂 I don’t put up anything that’s scary or gory. I like to think I keep my halloween decorations fun and classic with cobwebs, spiders, skeletons and eyeballs. Last year I put up a few decorations so I started by taking a look at what we already had. As always my goal is to keep things simple, inexpensive, and not clutter the house with unnecessary purchases since space is ALWAYS an issue. I had a couple ideas in my head and had been searching Pinterest, you can check out my Halloween board here.

This wreath for the front door was easy, quick and cheap. My kind of project!! I just wrapped some cobwebs around a foam wreath I had in the stash, added some spiders and a black ribbon to hang it with.

I put cobwebs up in the corners of the living room and stuck some spiders in them because what’s a web without spiders? I just started arranging random items on the shelf until I was happy with the end result.

I made the mummy votives by wrapping some cheesecloth from the dollar store around recycled jars, adding some google eyes and dropping a couple battery operated tea lights inside. The rest of the stuff came from random places like the dollar store, Michael’s and the 99 cent store.

I re used my hurricane jars on media center, filling them with candy corns, mini skulls, skeleton hands and dollar store ears. I wrapped the books with some black construction paper to give them a little height.

The glass thing hanging by my front door (that I have no name for) was filled with some eyeballs.

I’m really happy with the Halloween decorations this year, now it’s tIme to start looking for costumes.

Decorating for Fall – On a Budget

Happy Tuesday everyone!!

Is it starting to feel like fall where you are yet? It’s officially Autumn and I’m super excited! SO ready to say goodbye to summer and welcome cool, clear weather, falling leaves and cozy nights. It also means it’s time to Decorate for Fall and I wanted to add small simple touches around the house. As much as I’m trying to lighten things up I went back to reds and browns with mixes of orange. They are the colors of autumn, I see them everywhere and I love bringing them inside. In the spirit of simplicity I wanted to use what I had on hand which wasn’t much, a pack of leaves, a small welcome sign, some candles, battery operated tea lights and two hurricane jars. I also had some recycled glass jars I wanted to do something with and found the perfect  solution on Pinterest. Other than that, nada.

One of the good things about living in a small space is a little decorating goes a long way, simple touches are all it takes. To keep things on the cheap l hit up the dollar store and came home with two packs of leaves, three packs of mini decorations, a small scarecrow and a craft pumpkin. On a trip to Home Goods I picked up a fabric covered pumpkin.

I have a couple shelves in the living room I LOVE decorating for the holidays. I used my welcome sign from last year, got the scarecrow from the dollar store and found the pumpkin in one of my mom’s closets. The milk jar and twig are always out and so is the frame.

I made some autumn lanterns with the recycled glass jars, a couple fake leaves some twine and battery operated tealight candles. The small topiary sits in that spot the majority of the year.

I have a glass hanging thing (not sure what it’s called) by the front door that I filled with mini pumpkins and gourds.

The media center got a simple update. I wrapped two books with the same decorative paper I used in the entry , filled the hurricane jars with leftover lentils and tied two fake leaves around the candles with some twine, I picked up that adorable pumpkin at Home Goods.

I can’t sew worth a stitch so I asked my beautiful and talented niece for some help. I gave her one and a half packs of the fake leaves and asked her to sew them together to create a garland.

I love the way the autumn luminary looks when the tea lights are on, it has such a beautiful glow.

Have you started decorating for fall yet? What will you be using in your home, are you making, buying or a bit of both?

Swear Jar – Part of my Financial Fast Challenge

Hi-Lo everyone. The weekend is here and the first week of school is over! What was back to school week like at your house? This is my third post in three days, talk about post overload. This is a super quick, super simple project but one that I hope will have a positive impact on me. I have a REALLY bad habit that I need to work on… I know I have the capacity to overcome my bad habit and now is a really good time to do it. Sometimes I swear and the other day I heard my younger son repeat a word I’d rather not have him say. So I decided to implement a swear jar, at first I was going with a quarter a swear but then I decided on a dollar a swear thinking the ouch factor would really compel me to breath and find a different word to use. Since I still have a day left in my financial fast challenge the jar had to cost $0 and that wasn’t a problem.

I grabbed a washed out spaghetti jar from my stash, spray painted the lid, added some stickers for decoration and put it on the windowsill so it could be fed easily when i slip up.

The swear jar has been in effect for a few days now and it’s been fed but i already see an improvement and find myself swearing less. I’m going to leave the jar out until the end of the year and see how much money it collects. I’m not exactly sure what to do with it but I was thinking about buying something for myself… I Know, I know, that seems counterproductive but I feel like if the jar is successful there shouldn’t be a lot of money in there anyway and it’ll be a small reward for my effort.
