Heartfelt & Handmade Gifts – Holiday Bags

Hi-Lo everyone? Has it gotten cold where you are yet? We had some nice weather in NY this weekend but it’s supposed to get cold again. And frankly, I’m a little happy to hear that. It doesn’t feel like Christmas to me if it’s not cold. There really isn’t much time left with eight days left and counting before Christmas is here. Especially when your goal is to make and give heartfelt and handmade gifts to family and friends. I like to give a mix of purchased and handmade gifts every year. I love getting gifts people put thought, time and energy into. I mean sure a gift card is nice but you feel special when someone goes the extra mile.

Quite a few years back I started making felt bags to give gifts in. These holiday bags are easy and cheap to make, they’re also a lot of fun to decorate. You can personalize them or just decorate them for the holiday.

  • Felt
  • Needle
  • White dental floss
  • Sewing machine (optional)

I’m sewing machine challenged and while I know more today than I did a year ago (thanks to my talented niece) I still prefer to sew these with a large needle and dental floss. You can whip these up in no time with a sewing machine if you prefer.

I usually sew mine while I’m watching a movie or something. This is the kind of craft that doesn’t require much thought. You just want to make sure the stitch is straight; it looks a little funny if it’s crooked. I cut two strips of felt for the handles and stitch along both sides. When that’s done I attach them with my glue gun. You can sew them of course but gluing is easier.

I just love making these felt holiday bags for family and friends.

Super Easy Carrot Cake Recipe

easy carrot cake recipe

I absolutely LOVE to bake, I always have. And now that I’ve taken a few cake decorating classes at Michael’s I love to decorate cakes as well. One of my favorite kinds of cake is carrot. This is one of the easiest and most delicious carrot cake recipes I have ever tried! I can’t take credit for the recipe though, I found it on Jessica’s website Mom4real.

  • Cake:
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 eggs
  • 3 cups grated carrots (I like mine finely grated)
  • Icing:
  • 3/4 stick of softened butter
  • 1 8oz bar cream cheese
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 16oz box of confectioners sugar

  1. Cake:
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  3. Combine dry ingredients with a whisk or spatula
  4. Add oil and then eggs one at a time. But do not over beat
  5. Fold in carrots
  6. Fill 2 round cake pans floured and greased or 24 cupcakes and bake for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick in the middle comes out clean
  7. Icing:
  8. Beat together butter and cream cheese until smooth
  9. Add extract and mix in
  10. Add entire box of powdered sugar and beat until creamy and smooth about 5 minutes

You can half the recipe for a dozen cupcakes or just one pan.

The cupcakes are flavorful, moist and light. Truly one of the most delicious carrot cake recipes I’ve ever made 🙂 I learned how to make buttercream frosting a few months ago and have been obsessed. Now this is my new go to icing. It’s AWESOME! I’ve already baked twice this week.
